SCHOONER KILN
Appledore Arts Festival, Devon, May 2007
I was invited to take part in Appledore Arts Festival as part of a celebration of the 400 years of trade in ceramics between Appledore and Johnstone in the USA. Some of the oldest trade ships that transported goods to the USA were Schooners. Fired inside this kiln-sculpture were many smaller ships and boats made by school children from 4 local schools during workshops conducted by Phillip Leach, Julie Bosworth, and Chris Taylor.
Many thanks to all at Appledore Arts for their support especially Sandy Brown and Patrick who so generously accommodated and fed myself and other helpers during the week of constructing the kilns. It made the whole experience very warming. Thanks also to those who helped in the construction and firing of the kiln: Ania, Katalin Horvath, Charlie Ridley, and Rupert Johnstone.
