CUBITTS

The Cubbitts Sculpture
Completed 2007
Concrete, steel and ceramic
Designed by Tom Barnett, tiles made by pupils from Cranleigh School

I was asked by Cranleigh School to work with pupils to make a sculpture for a new courtyard within the School Campus. The School requested that the form should be original and dynamic and in some way use relief form to express six different aspects of life at Cranleigh: academic work, music, theatre, sport, art, and social life.

With the help of builders and engineers an internal steel structure was designed and built which supported the heavy cast concrete form. Meanwhile pupils from the school photographed each others hands doing various activities relating to the six themes, and transferred these into clay relief. These were put onto giant tiles that were then divided up, fired, and cemented onto the scupture.
